Faces and places

Karen Stewart, sales representative, and Carrie Farrell, staffing consultant, recently joined Express Personnel Services, Lawrence. The company is locally-owned and operated by Jerry Magnuson. Express Personnel is part of an international network made up of more than 435 franchises.

Stephen Griffeth, president and CEO of Midwest Institute of Hypnosis and Guided Imagery in Lawrence, has been named to the 2002-2003 edition of Who’s Who In Executives and Professionals.

Jane Tuttle, Sue Reiske and Chris Munson attended Leader Continuing Education Day April 20 in Wichita. The day was sponsored by the Kansas La Leche League. The local La Leche League leaders are accredited breast-feeding counselors through La Leche League International.

Munson completed the basic Human Relations Enrichment program while Tuttle and Reiske attended advanced Human Relations Enrichment classes.

Robin Byer is the new women’s health coordinator for Health Care Access Inc. and Breast Cancer Action Inc. She will be responsible for facilitating educational opportunities, raising awareness of breast cancer and promoting resources for women’s health services in Lawrence and Douglas County. Her position is funded by the Greater Kansas City area Susan G. Komen Foundation. Byer is from the Chicago area and has worked as a registered nurse in various capacities since 1980.

Timothy Mirtz, a Lawrence chiropractor, was lead author with seven other authors in a study published in the February 2002 issue of the Journal of Controversial Medical Claims. The paper was entitled “National Association for Chiropractic Medicine and Its Argument With Mainstream Chiropractic Health Care.” Mirtz serves as national membership director and serves on the clinical policy and guidelines revision committee for the NACM.

Erik Anderson has joined Athenix Solutions as a project manager and business analyst where he assists with the project discovery process and requirements development.

Anderson earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Kansas University in 1994. Anderson worked as a project and construction engineer at the Kansas Department of Transportation where he coordinated and managed various aspects of inspection and testing during heavy highway construction. He is a licensed professional engineer in the state of Kansas.

Lindsay Lehman recently completed a seminar in QuickBooks Pro 2002. Lehman is president of LJ Solutions, a contract office management services firm that produces newsletters and brochures and offers a range of services for small- to medium-sized businesses. LJ Solutions is a division of Lehman Communications Inc., a Lawrence-based contract lobbying, communications consulting and association management firm.

Tricia Walter has been promoted to pharmacy manager at Dillons, 1015 W. 23rd St. Walter has been with the company since 1995, most recently serving as a staff pharmacist at the 17th and Massachusetts store.

Randy LaRue has joined the firm of Larry A. Hatfield Appraisals as a residential real estate appraiser. LaRue is a Kansas licensed appraiser, specializing in single family homes and income properties.

Greg Haehl has joined Douglas County Title Company as vice president and chief title officer. Haehl formerly was an owner of the company. His responsibilities will include oversight of title staff, abstracting and title insurance activities of the company. Haehl attended Lawrence schools and Kansas University. He has spent the past seven years as an escrow manager for a title office in Boulder, Colo.

Peggy Johnson, a financial advisor with the Lawrence area office of American Express, has been appointed a member of the company’s advanced advisor group called Senior Financial Advisors. Members are selected based upon their experience as financial consultants, recognized professional designations and superior financial planning, quality of advice and client service. Senior financial advisors are authorized to provide an expanded scope of personal, comprehensive financial planning to clients.

Several Lawrence optometrists attended the 2002 Kansas Optometric Assn. convention in Topeka. Optometrists were able to attend 13 hours of continuing education on the latest developments in eye care for relicensure. Among those attending from Lawrence were Curtis Anderson, Brent Crandon, Kent Dobbins, Steven Flory, Sharon Green, John Harvat, Gary Joyce, Charles Pohl, Arthur Queen and Darrel Smith.

Honors and awards

FryeAllen, Inc. and partner companies FryeAllen Digital Inc. and FryeAllen Films Inc. have received 30 ADDY awards.

FryeAllen Inc. received the Best of Show in Broadcast Award for a television advertisement featuring Boss Hawg’s BBQ & Catering. The Best of Show Award spotlights the best broadcast entry in Kansas.

Five ADDY awards were presented to FryeAllen Inc. and one to FryeAllen Digital Inc.

FryeAllen Inc. received 18 Citation of Excellence awards while FryeAllen Films Inc. received two and FryeAllen Digital received two.

The ADDY competition is a statewide annual event and honors creative excellence in advertising. Agencies, media and businesses submitted entries that were judged by nationally recognized experts. An ADDY Award recognizes excellence in advertising and cultivates the highest creative standards in the industry.

FryeAllen received awards for their work with several Lawrence clients including, Scotch Cleaners, and Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community.

FryeAllen and partners also received several Telly awards.

FryeAllen Inc. received Tellys for two finalists. FryeAllen Digital had Tellys for one silver and three finalists. FryeAllen Films was the recipient of one Telly for a finalist.

The Telly awards showcase and recognize outstanding TV commercials from across the nation, including industrial film and video productions.

Three Douglas County child-care professionals have been awarded a Child Development Associate credential in recognition of outstanding work with young children.

They are Yvette Bowlin-Prager and Deb Danielson, both of Lawrence, and Linda Chancellor, Eudora.

The credential was awarded by the Council for Professional Recognition in Washington, D.C. The credential is a national effort to improve child care by evaluation and recognizing the skills of individuals providing care.

Every candidate for the CDA is observed working with young children or families by an early childhood professional. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to work with families to develop children’s physical and intellectual capabilities in a safe and healthy learning environment.

Coming events

Pendleton & Sutton Attorneys at Law, which specializes in the rights of property owners, will host a free, informational seminar to help make the job of being a landlord or property manager easier.

The seminar will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the community room of the Lawrence Visitors Center, 402 N. Second. Registration will be from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The seminar will cover the proper content for a lease, proper check-in and check-out procedures, the Kansas Residential Landlord-Tenant Act and steps one should follow to make it easier to go to court to remove someone from a property. Information also will be presented on the new Rental Housing Inspection and Licensing Program mandated by the City of Lawrence.

Consumer Credit Counseling Services will present “Discover More Dollars” from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the United Way Building, 2518 Ridge Court, in Lawrence. The workshop will cover topics such as financial goal setting, developing a realistic budget, cutting costs, evaluating spending habits and starting a savings plan.
