Lions split twinbill

? Lawrence High recovered from a close loss in the first game of Saturday’s baseball doubleheader against Lee’s Summit (Mo.) North with a romp in the second contest at LSN.

LHS (2-1) dropped the opener, 5-3, and rolled in the second game, 12-2.

“The first game we weren’t ready offensively,” LHS coach David Petry said. “We had several strikeouts looking and we tried to be more aggressive in the second game. Their pitchers threw strikes, and don’t walk many hitters.”

After being limited to eight singles in first game, LHS erupted for 11 singles, a double and triple in the second game against LSN (5-4). The Lions scored three runs in the first, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Ryan Rowland, Rob Scott, Tommy Mangino, Casey Rahmeier and Cameron Taylor all had two hits apiece in the second game for LHS. Troy Wingert had a triple and three RBIs.

Taylor Martin was the winning pitcher in the second game. He had four strikeouts and allowed no earned runs in 423 innings.

In the first game, LHS senior shortstop Chris Johnson suffered a mild concussion after he was hit by a pitch in the back of the helmet.

“He was experiencing some dizziness and blurred vision right after it happened,” Petry said. “He seemed to be pretty normal by the time he left.”

LHS will play host to Free State at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Ice Field.
