Musicians to gather for Acoustic Showcase

The next Acoustic Showcase will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday at Brown Bear Brewery Co., 729 Mass.

The lineup includes Bob Linder, Bjorn Birkestrand, Jay Montgomery, Sometimes Nowhere, Hamp Henning, Chris Beightel, Dylan Francis, Anthony Ware, David Laurence, Richard Gintowt, Larry Garrett, Sheri Martin, Hollis Berry, Meg Hogan, Boys of the Prairie, Bob Haake and Random Harmony.

Critics, poets to appear at Debicki symposium

“The Discovery of Poetry: A Symposium to Honor Andrew P. Debicki” will be Thursday-Saturday at Kansas University. All sessions will be the Malott Room in the Kansas Union.

Debicki began teaching at KU in 1968, first in Spanish and Portuguese and then in the areas of humanities and Western civilization. He continues to teach and conduct research.

The schedule includes:

 Friday: “Plotting Exile,” by Salvador Jimenez-Fajardo, State University of New York-Binghamton; “Los gozos de la contemplacion,” by Birute Ciplijauskaite, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 9 a.m.-10:15 a.m.

“El medio siglo de Valente,” by Santiago Daydi-Tolson, University of Texas-San Antonio; “Rasgos distintivos de la generacion poetica del 50,” by Jaime Siles, a Spanish poet, Universitat St. Gallen, Switzerland, 10:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

“Angel Gonzalez Reading Juan Ramon Jimenez,” by John Wilcox, University of Illinois-Champaign-Urbana, a poetry reading by Angel Gonzalez, a Spanish poet, University of New Mexico, 1:45 p.m.-4 p.m.

 Saturday: “Virile Femininity: Gender, Language and Knowledge,” by Jill Robbins, University of California-Irvine; “Ojos verdes: Recent Spanish Poetry and the Ecocritical Debate,” by Margaret H. Persin, Rutgers University, 9 a.m.-10:15 a.m.

“Poeticas de las poetas de medio siglo,” by Sharon Keefe Ugalde, Southwest Texas State University; “Crossing Genre Boundaries: Atencia and Martin Gaite,” by Martha LaFollette Miller, University of North Carolina-Charlotte, 10:45 a.m.-noon.

Play brings Hughes, Hurston to life

Kansas City, Mo. Â Jacqee Gafford, director, actor and playwright, brings a lighthearted romp through the Harlem Renaissance to life in an encore production of “Harlem Knights” at the Just Off Broadway Theatre, 3051 Central.

Performances are at 8 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays, beginning Thursday and running through April 20.

“Harlem Knights” imagines a party thrown for the homecoming of Langston Hughes by his unpredictable and irascible friend Zora Neal Hurston.

Army band tubist to perform recital at KU

Sean Chisham, a tubist for the U.S. Army Band, will give a recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Swarthout Recital Hall in Murphy Hall at Kansas University.

The program includes “Horn Concerto No. 1 in E Flat, Op. 11” by Richard Strauss; “Three Miniatures” by Anthony Plog; “Nocturno for Horn in F, Op. 7” by Franz Strauss; and “Concerto for Bass Tuba” by Ralph Vaughn Williams.

Chisham earned a bachelor’s degree at Kansas University and a master’s degree at Northwestern University.
