Trey record-holder eyes title

? Jeff Boschee has the record. Now he wants a ring.

Entering the NCAA Tournament’s Midwest Regional finals last weekend, Kansas University’s senior guard from Valley City, N.D., was tied with Missouri senior Clarence Gilbert for the Big 12 Conference career record with 331 three-pointers.

Gilbert sank only one of nine three-point attempts in the Tigers’ loss to Oklahoma in the West Regional final, while Boschee sank two of seven treys in the Jayhawks’ 104-86 victory over Oregon in the Midwest Regional championship game.

Boschee can pad his record of 333 three-pointers in Saturday’s national semifinal game against Maryland at Atlanta (7:47 p.m., Georgia Dome), while Gilbert finished his career with 332.

“It means a lot,” Boschee said. “It’s not very often someone gets to come into a big-time program and set a record. It was a great battle between Clarence and I. It’s unfortunate he didn’t get to play in as many games as I do. I was fortunate on that end.”

Boschee has enjoyed his best season as a senior. After sinking 81 of 195 three-pointers (41.5 percent) as a sophomore, his numbers dipped to 68 of 189 (36.0) last season.

He failed to knock down a three-pointer in KU’s season-opening loss to Ball State, but he’s hit at least one trey in each of the 35 games since. He set career highs with 105 threes on 224 attempts (46.9 percent).

Boschee said he’s been more disciplined in his approach this year.

“I really attribute it to working on my form every day before practice,” he said. “I’ve concentrated hard on that  working on my arch, following through and things like that.”

Boschee has continued to shoot well in the NCAA Tournament. He’s made 12 of 24 three-pointers in the Jayhawks’ first four games while averaging 12 points per contest. He scored a team-high 19 points, including five three-pointers, in KU’s 86-63 second-round victory over Stanford. On Sunday, he sparked KU against Oregon by making a three-pointer six seconds into the regional final.

“It gets them started right, gets my confidence going,” he said. “I did struggle from the floor in the Oregon game, but I think it got us fired up, got us going, when I hit that three right off the bat.”

Three-point shooting isn’t the only thing he’s done well. The senior has posted career-best totals in field goals (162 on 342 attempts), field-goal percentage (47.4), rebounds (94), steals (48) and scoring average (13.3 points per game).

Despite his contributions to a Big 12 Conference champion and Final Four team, Boschee was a third-team all-conference pick. He was often overshadowed by All-American Drew Gooden, Nick Collison and fellow guard Kirk Hinrich.

“Sometimes Jeff is the forgotten man, but he’s not forgotten by our staff or players,” coach Roy Williams said.

The depth that has made Boschee easy to overlook has helped second-ranked Kansas roll to a 33-3 record and its first trip to the Final Four in nine seasons. It has been KU’s best season in Boschee’s four years in Lawrence. In fact, Kansas lost 10 games in both his freshman and sophomore seasons.

“That wasn’t acceptable by Kansas standards, but any other team in the nation would have taken that,” he said. “It means a lot for me to get to the Final Four. Not many people get to go. It’s extremely satisfying. We do have some work to do. Hopefully, we have two games left and then the season will be completely satisfying.”
