LHS girls open with 0-0 tie with SM West

? Lawrence High’s season-opening girls soccer contest against Shawnee Mission West on Thursday ended in 0-0 double-overtime draw at the Shawnee Mission District Complex.

“We had about five real good opportunities to score,” LHS coach Keith Nelson said after the 100-minute game. “Sam Lopez had some nice chances as did Carrie Skahan and Kara Roelofs. Everyone knew we played really well. Both teams had chances to win, but neither team could stick it in the net.”

Nelson lauded the defensive efforts of sweeper Lindsey Garito, defenders Bliss Lemmon and Dyana Lawrence and goalie Shannon Fisher.

“Those four stepped up huge,” Nelson said. “I didn’t know what to expect. I knew Shawnee Mission West (1-1-1) would be a good team. They were better than I thought.”

LHS, which finished last season with nine victories, will play Monday at Shawnee Mission East, last year’s Class 6A state runner-up.
