Wildcats rip Kent, 93-65

? Laurie Koehn made five three-pointers and scored 27 overall as Kansas State beat Kent State, 93-65, Friday night in the first round of the NCAA women’s basketball tournament.

Kansas State (25-7) the third-seeded team in the Mideast Regional, shot 59 percent in the first half and was not threatened after taking a 48-29 lead at the break.

The Wildcats went on a 6-0 run with 12:28 remaining in the first half and followed it with a 14-3 run to roll to their first second-round appearance in 19 years.

Kent State (20-11), seeded 14th, trailed by as many as 35 points as its six-game winning streak ended.

Nicole Ohlde and Kendra Wecker added 22 points each for Kansas State. Andrea Csaszar had 25 points, Katalin Kollat 13 and Valerie Zona 11 for Kent State.

Kansas State will play Arkansas on Sunday in the second round.

Texas Tech 84,

Stephen F. Austin 63

Lubbock, Texas  Tanisha Ellison scored a career-high 20 points, and Jolee Ayers had a double-double as Texas Tech beat Stephen F. Austin in the West Regional. Tech (19-11) had five players in double figures and never trailed, jumping out to a 14-5 lead. The 13th-seeded Ladyjacks shot only 2-for-11 in the game’s first eight minutes.

Baylor 80, Bucknell 56

Waco, Texas  Reserve Steffanie Blackmon had 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead Baylor over Bucknell in the East Regional. Sheila Lambert contributed 17 points and Danielle Crockrom 14 as the Bears (27-5) gained their first victory ever in NCAA postseason play. Molly Creamer’s 18 points led Bucknell (21-10).

The Bears shot 52 percent, hitting 32 of 62. The Bison connected on only 20 of 64 attempts for 31 percent. Baylor dominated Bucknell on the boards, pulling down 46 to the Bison’s 25.

No. 12 Colorado 88, Southern 61

Boulder, Colo. Â Britt Hartshorn scored 15 points to lead five Colorado players in double figures, and the No. 3 seed overwhelmed cold-shooting Southern in a West Regional game Host Colorado, ranked 12th, shot 59 percent compared to Southern’s 31 percent.

Texas 60,

Wisconsin-Green Bay 55

Austin, Texas  Asha Hill scored 14 points in the second half as Texas beat Wisconsin-Green Bay. Hill was 4-for-4 on 3-pointers and made two clinching free throws in the final seconds for fourth-seeded Texas (21-9), which got past the first round of the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1997. Texas advances to Sunday night’s second-round game against No. 12 seed UC Santa Barbara.
