Wisconsin fans take offense to KU’s Williams

? Some fans in Madison, Wis., may be planning on booing Kansas if the Jayhawks advance to the Midwest Regional, the Wisconsin State Journal reported Monday.

The paper said KU coach Roy Williams said this after a 99-98 Jayhawk victory over UCLA in November of 2000:

“Are you going to tell me you didn’t like this more than 19-17 at halftime? I’m not a nuclear physicist, but you make the choice. We’re trying to make it a game of basketball skills and not a weight-room contest.”

The paper said the remarks were a reference to the halftime score of the 2000 NCAA national semifinal game between Michigan State and Wisconsin and a “not-so-subtle slam against the style of play employed by former Badgers coach Dick Bennett.”

“It would be interesting to see how the Wisconsin fans would react to (Williams),” said Jamie Pollard, UW associate athletic director for finance, who is the tournament director for the Midwest regional finals at the Kohl Center March 22 and 24. “He’s a great coach, a legendary coach. It’s an honor for us to have him and their program as a No. 1 seed in our regional.”

A search of the Journal-World archives did not locate the quote in question, but Williams has in the past used the Wisconsin-Michigan State game as an example of trying to clean up physical play in the post area.
