KU softball takes two

Now, if somehow Leah Tabb could just get her dad to come to all of her games.

Then, Tabb, a senior from Oklahoma City, might just put up All-American numbers.

Tabb sure did on Friday, when her dad, Jerry, made his first trip to Kansas to watch his daughter go 3-for-4 with a three-run homer, double, four RBIs, two runs and two stolen bases.

“I don’t recall a time where I haven’t hit a home run when he’s been there,” said Tabb with a smile, admitting she wanted to put on a little show for her pop.

Tabb’s offensive explosion paired with solid Jayhawk pitching was more than enough for Kansas to win its first-round games in the KU Holiday Inn Invitational as the Jayhawks shut out both Princeton, 3-0, and Indiana State, 6-0, Friday at Jayhawk Field.

“I’m really pleased,” said Kansas coach Tracy Bunge, whose team improved to 9-7 behind its season-best five-game win streak. “Two shutouts, against two good teams.”

Kansas, which will play Portland State at 3 p.m. today, got seven quality innings from sophomore pitcher Kara Pierce against Princeton and needed only the fourth to get enough offense for the victory.

The Jayhawks’ bats helped out Pierce, who struck out five Tigers, when Katie Campbell, Megan Urquhart and Tabb hit back-to-back-to-back doubles.

KU’s offense went to work much earlier in its second game when it scored a run in the first.

But things really got going in the third as the Jayhawks added five more runs and were on track for a run-rule victory.

With two outs and the bases loaded, Urquhart singled to left to score two. Tabb followed that with her third home run of the season as she smacked a shot that fell just over the left center wall.
