Investigators say shooting death was hunting accident

A Lawrence woman who was shot and killed Monday died as the result of a hunting accident, according to the Douglas County sheriff’s department.

Patricia French, 62, was shot Monday morning while she was out hunting rabbits with her husband, their daughter and son-in-law about two miles southeast of Lawrence.

Sheriff’s officials would not comment further on the shooting.

Family members brought French to paramedics at Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Station No. 2 shortly after noon Monday.

She was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

An autopsy will be done Tuesday or Wednesday.
