Tonganoxie boys falter

? Tonganoxie High had momentum, size and a higher seed, but the Chieftains couldn’t grab their first state appearance since 1984.

No. 6-seeded Atchison defeated No. 5-seeded Tonganoxie, 66-55, in a Class 4A boys basketball sub-state final on Saturday.

Guards Stephen Dray and Tony Carter supplied much of Atchison’s scoring, erupting for 22 and 20 points respectively.

Thomas Gilner led Tongie with 20 points, and Bryan Gurss added 16.

“Overall, we didn’t take care of the ball like we usually do,” THS coach David Walker said. “Give them credit. They got after a lot of loose balls.”

Tonganoxie ended its season 12-11, its first winning record since 1991-92.
