Type O donors sought for Monday blood drive

Community Blood Center is looking for people with Type O blood to donate at a Monday blood drive.

Although donors of all blood types are encouraged to participate in the drive, scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Lawrence Donation Center, 535 Gateway Drive, those with Type O blood are most needed. All donors will receive a commemorative T-shirt and refreshments from Great Harvest Bread Co.

During 2002, demand for Type O blood at Community Blood Center’s hospitals has increased by 14 percent, while actual transfusions have risen by just 4 percent. The center attributes increasing demand to the performance of more surgical procedures, an aging population and better health screening at county hospitals.

Community Blood Center is the only blood provider to Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health.
