Free concerts offered while institute runs

The International Institute for Young Musicians is returning to Kansas University after a three-year hiatus.

The institute runs from Monday to July 19. Free, honors concerts are planned at 7 p.m. Friday, July 10 and July 17 at the Lied Center.

Other free concerts will be at 6:30 p.m. July 8-16 in Swarthout Recital Hall in Murphy Hall.

Under the direction of KU graduate Scott McBride Smith, the institute attracts piano and string students of all ages from around the world. The program combines private lessons with supporting classes in sight-reading, music theory, accompanying, opera and careers in music.
