Roundup: Posada powers Yanks past Mets with pair

Catcher goes deep from both sides

? The New York Mets won the home-run derby. Jorge Posada and the New York Yankees won the game.

Posada connected from both sides of the plate to drive in five runs and Robin Ventura knocked in four against his former team as the Yankees beat the Mets, 11-5, Friday night.

The Yankees' Jorge Posada is congratulated by teammates Robin Ventura and Bernie Williams (51) who all scored on Posada's three-run home run. The New York catcher homered from both sides of the plate in the Yankees' 11-5 victory over the crosstown-rival Mets on Friday at Yankee Stadium in New York.

Yet for all the big hits, Orlando Hernandez provided the biggest lift for the Yankees. Fresh off the disabled list from a bad back, he came in with an 8-5 edge and pitched four scoreless innings for his first career save.

“El Duque restored order,” Yankees manager Joe Torre said.

Hernandez, who will soon rejoin the rotation, seemed enthused about his outing. He kept the ball from his save, and then even did a rare interview in English.

“I know the question,” he said. “I feel good. I feel fine. I’m very happy to come back to the team. It was a good night.”

As lightning crackled beyond the center-field fence and a sellout crowd of 55,739 chanted, the city rivals combined for five homers in the first five innings.

Braves 4, Red Sox 2

Boston Vinny Castilla and Henry Blanco drove in runs in the ninth inning as Atlanta beat Boston in a matchup of teams that began the night as division leaders. Tim Wakefield (2-3) allowed a leadoff double in the ninth to Gary Sheffield, who stayed at second as the next two batters flied out to center field. Then Castilla singled in Sheffield, Darren Bragg walked for the third time and Blanco doubled home Castilla. John Smoltz retired the side in order for his 26th save. Mike Remlinger (4-0) got the win after pitching the eighth.

White Sox 13, Cubs 9

Chicago Paul Konerko homered twice after getting plunked on the helmet by Kerry Wood, and the White Sox rallied to beat the crosstown rival Cubs in front of the largest regular-season crowd at new Comiskey Park. Konerko went 4-for-4, his second straight four-hit game, and finished with four RBIs and four runs scored.

Indians 8, Diamondbacks 2

Cleveland C.C. Sabathia (6-6) allowed just one earned run and four hits in 72/3 innings one day after the Indians sent Bartolo Colon to the Montreal Expos in a six-player deal. Sabathia struck out five and walked three in winning for the first time in four starts all against NL teams.

Twins 5, Brewers 1

Minneapolis A.J. Pierzynski and Dustan Mohr each hit two-run homers and Johan Santana threw eight strong innings for Minnesota. Brewers starter Ben Sheets (4-9) was hurt by the long ball.

Phillies 6, Orioles 2

Baltimore Pat Burrell hit a three-run homer and Randy Wolf got his first victory in more than a month for Philadelphia. Philadelphia matched its season high with four home runs. Wolf (4-6) was 0-4 in six starts since beating Arizona on May 19. The left-hander allowed seven hits and two runs in 72/3 innings, walking one and striking out four.

Toronto Tony Armas Jr. and Scott Stewart combined on a three-hitter, and Fernando Tatis hit a tiebreaking home run in the seventh inning as Montreal beat Toronto. Montreal slugger Vladimir Guerrero went 0-for-4, ending his 20-game hitting streak. Armas (8-7) allowed one run on three hits in seven innings, improving to 3-0 in his last five starts. Blue Jays starter Roy Halladay (9-4) allowed just three hits before Tatis hit his ninth homer in the seventh.

Devil Rays 4, Marlins 0

St. Petersburg, Fla. Wilson Alvarez pitched four-hit ball for seven innings for his first victory at Tropicana Field in nearly three years. Alvarez (2-2), who missed the last two seasons recovering from left shoulder surgery, struck out five and walked three to extend his streak of scoreless innings against the Marlins this season to 13. The Devil Rays, who have won three straight overall, scored three times in the second. Jared Sandberg hit solo homer off Ryan Dempster (5-7).

The AL West-leading Mariners stretched their winning streak to four games with their 50th victory, while the Rockies dropped their fourth in a row. Both runs off Pineiro (8-3) came on homers. The Rockies got Larry Walker’s 17th of the season in the fourth and a 421-foot shot to center from Benny Agbayani in the fifth to tie it at 2.

Dodgers 7, Angels 5

Anaheim, Calif. Pinch-runner Cesar Izturis scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning on a routine fly that dropped in right-center field, and Eric Gagne got four outs for his major league-leading 29th save. Before a lively sellout crowd of 43,690 that appeared equally divided between Angels and Dodgers fans, Los Angeles increased its NL West lead to 31/2 games over Arizona.

Athletics 10, Giants 6

Oakland, Calif. Mark Mulder won his seventh straight start as Oakland snapped a three-game losing streak. Mulder (9-4) cruised through the first eight innings, but gave up four hits in the ninth before giving way to Mike Venafro with one out remaining. Venafro struck out Barry Bonds to end it. Mulder gave up nine hits and six runs four earned in matching a career high with the seven-start winning streak, from July 6 to Aug. 12 last year.
