U.S. 56, 59 Highway pranks continue

Seven more vehicles in the past two days have been hit by cans or bottles while traveling highways south of Lawrence. That brings to 14 the total of similar incidents reported since June 19.

And as the windshield-shattering attacks continue, Douglas County Sheriff’s officials say it’s only a matter of time before they result in a crash.

“We’re very lucky no one has been hurt,” said Douglas County Sheriff’s Lt. Ken Massey.

Since last week, 14 motorists have reported thrown objects damaging their vehicles as they traveled along U.S. Highway 59 south of Lawrence and U.S. Highway 56 west of Baldwin.

Reports still were being compiled Wednesday, and details about additional incidents weren’t available.

Descriptions of the vehicles used by the suspect or suspects have been received, ranging from a variety of small cars to trucks, investigators said.

Some victims have reported soda pop cans thrown. All but one had a windshield shattered.

Some of the reports received recently were from people who learned of the other incidents from the media, Massey said.

“They’re putting two and two together and realizing they weren’t hit by a bird or it wasn’t some random act,” Massey said.

Anyone who becomes a victim is asked to immediately call sheriff’s dispatchers through 911, either by cell phone or stopping at a business that is still open in Baldwin or the junction of U.S. 56 and 59, Massey said.

Anyone with information that might help the investigation is asked to call 843-TIPS. Callers may remain anonymous.
