Crime: Sheriff seeks information about objects thrown at cars

Objects thrown from passing cars have damaged the windshields of at least four vehicles on U.S. 59 and U.S. 56 in southern Douglas County since late last week.

In two of the incidents, cans of root beer are thought to have been thrown, according to Douglas County Sheriff’s officers.

A can of Shasta root beer was thrown through the windshield of a 1999 Ford Ranger pickup truck about 8:30 p.m. Thursday on U.S. 59 near U.S. 56.

About 11:55 p.m. that night in the 400 section of U.S. 59., an Osawatomie man told officers someone threw something that smelled like rootbeer, damaging the windshield on his 2002 Chevrolet pickup.

Two other drivers on Thursday and Sunday reported similar incidents of unidentified objects striking the windshields along U.S. 59 and U.S. 56. No injuries have been reported.

Sheriff’s officers said the suspect might be driving a red, early 1990s Grand Am with a Kansas license plate. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 843-TIPS.

Animal neglect: Police take three pit bulls from western Lawrence home

Lawrence Police are looking for the owner of three pit bulls found Friday evening fighting among themselves behind a residence in the 4000 block of Overland Drive.

The dogs had suffered a variety of injuries from the fighting and were taken into protective custody by Lawrence Animal Control and the Humane Society, police Sgt. Mike Pattrick said.

There was no evidence the dogs had been given food or water recently, Pattrick said. No one was at the residence when police received the call about dogs fighting, he said. Police are looking for a 26-year-old man thought to be the owner, Pattrick said.

Fatality: Victim identified in car accident death

A man who died in a one-car accident Sunday about three miles southeast of Baldwin has been identified as a Lenexa man.

Travis M. Schuh, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene, Sheriff’s Lt. Kathy Tate said. He was a passenger in a 1992 Eagle Talon driven by Joshua S. Suess, 18, also of Lenexa, Tate said.

Suess was in fair condition Monday at KU Med, a hospital spokesman said. He was taken there from the accident scene by Life Net helicopter.

Sheriff’s officers are still investigating the accident, Tate said. Officers, however, think the accident occurred when the Talon went out of control and overturned, Tate said.

The Talon was southbound on East 2000 Road just north of North 100 Road. The accident was reported about 5:40 a.m. The sheriff’s office is still investigating the circumstances concerning how it was reported, Tate said.
