Politics: Reform Party candidate announces run for governor

A small-businessman has announced he is running for governor on the Reform Party of Kansas ticket.

Ted Pettibone, St. Marys, said his priorities, if elected, would be fiscal reform, simplifying business regulations in an effort to make the state more business friendly, education and supporting right-to-life legislation.

Pettibone, 44, was born in Michigan and attended Hillsdale College, where he earned a degree in accounting with a minor in German. He later earned a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Texas. He owns a small business. He and his wife, Sabrina, have eight children, ages 2 through 15.

Pettibone’s running mate is Mike Wilson, an associate professor of electronic engineering technology at Kansas State University’s Salina campus. Wilson is the outgoing Reform Party chairman, a position he had for two consecutive terms.

Boys & Girls Club: Barbecue fund-raiser to precede golf tourney

The Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence is hoping charitable Lawrence residents will pay to pig out at its first Big Pig barbecue fund-raiser in July.

The all-you-can-eat barbecue buffet will be July 25, the evening before the organization’s 12th annual Boys & Girls Club Golf Classic at Alvamar Golf Course.

Tickets to Big Pig, to be on the grounds of Meadowbrook Apartments, 15th Street and Crestline Drive, are available for $20 per person at the Boys & Girls Club main site, 1520 Haskell Ave.; the five American Family Insurance offices in Lawrence; KLWN/KLZR Radio, 3125 W. Sixth St.; all Hy-Vee Food Stores; People’s Bank locations; and Sunflower Broadband customer service center, 1 Riverfront Plaza.

A live auction and musical entertainment will accompany the barbecue, which begins at 6 p.m. Gates open at 5 p.m.

The charity golf tournament begins at 1:30 p.m. July 26.

The Boys & Girls Club, founded in 1974, serves more than 500 children daily at eight Lawrence locations.
