KU’s NIT opener finalized

Kansas will play Holy Cross in a first-round Preseason NIT basketball game at 8 p.m. Nov. 19 at Allen Fieldhouse, the NIT announced Monday.

If KU wins, the Jayhawks would meet the winner of the Wagner-UNC Greensboro game at 6 p.m. Nov. 22 at Allen Fieldhouse. Other first-round matchups on KU’s side of the bracket are Penn State at North Carolina and Columbia at Rutgers.

The other side of the bracket matches Boston vs. Stanford; St. Peter’s vs. Xavier; Eastern Illinois vs. Boise State and Louisiana Tech vs. Florida.

Barring any surprises, Kansas would meet North Carolina and former KU assistant Matt Doherty in an NIT semifinal on Nov. 27 at New York’s Madison Square Garden. The championship and third-place games are Nov. 29 at the Garden.

“We are glad to be playing. We are glad to have a game in Allen Fieldhouse,” KU coach Roy Williams said. “Our kids will definitely have a great deal of respect for Holy Cross. They know how that last game was. There’s not any question we will not be looking past them, that’s for sure.”

KU, 15-1 all-time in the NIT and 12-0 under Williams, edged Holy Cross, 70-59, in the first round of the 2002 NCAA Tournament.
