Football players flock to Lawrence

High school players from around the country were scheduled to report today to Haskell Indian Nations University to begin preparations for Saturday’s Native American All-Star football game.

Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at Haskell Stadium. Game director Jeff Bigger of Tulsa, Okla., said he expected about 70 players to reside in the HINU dorms this week.

The West team will be coached by Herman Boone, a retired head coach of 40 years who lives in Alexandria, Va. The movie “Remember the Titans” was based on Boone’s first year at Williams High in Alexandria.

The East team’s coach is Carl Madison of Pensacola, Fla. Madison coached high school football for 42 years. In 1988, Madison’s Pensacola Pine Forest team was accorded the national championship by USA Today.

Three-a-day practices are scheduled Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday, morning and afternoon practices are on tap with an awards dinner scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

A combined skill test is set for 9 a.m. Saturday. An overall game MVP will be named as well as offensive and defensive players of the game for both squads.
