Georgia Aquarium coming to Atlanta

Atlanta A metro Atlanta site will be home to one of the world’s largest aquariums, sponsors say. The decision ends six months of speculation about its location.

The Marcus Foundation said it intends to buy 14 acres on the west side of the Atlantic Station, a residential and retail development near Georgia Tech. The site will house the 5-million-gallon Georgia Aquarium.

Bernard Marcus, co-founder of The Home Depot, made a $200 million commitment to the project in November. Marcus said the aquarium was a way to thank customers and employees who have helped the Atlanta-based company become the nation’s largest home-improvement retailer.

Construction is expected to begin next year.

Rick Slagle, executive director of the Marcus Foundation says the 138-acre Atlantic Station project will combine a retail and entertainment center, office towers, hotels and housing.

Gerald Ford museum to get makeover

Grand Rapids, Mich. Work will begin later this month on a $6.35 million project to renovate and expand the 21-year-old Gerald R. Ford Museum.

The museum’s permanent Ford exhibits will remain open throughout the construction project. Part of the project is scheduled to be completed by July 2003 and all remaining work is to be done by April 2004.

The 8,000-square-foot addition will offer a new featured-exhibit space, an education center, an interactive replica of the White House’s Cabinet Room and a museum store.
