A U.S. Navy reunion will be Oct. 10-12 at the Victorian Condo/Hotel in Galveston, Tex., for the USS Sperry (AS-12) Submarine Tender crew members who served from 1942 to 1982. Cadet John D. Finch, son of Ray and Jean Finch, Lawrence, has completed his studies at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and will be commissioned today as a second lieutenant. Finch was selected as a recipient of the East-West Scholarship and will pursue a graduate degree in Chinese at the East-West Center in Hawaii.

Matthew Wade Maness, Lawrence, has accepted an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy. He is the son of Larry and Joan Stowell. He is a 2002 graduate of Free State High School, where he was valedictorian. He was a member of the National Honor Society and received the Principal’s Mark of Excellence Award. He participated in football, wrestling, track, Boys State, French Club and Math Club while at FSHS. He worked at Anderson Rentals.

Matthew also had received an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Fernando Prieto, a 2000 graduate of Lawrence High School, recently graduated from the Basic Hospital Corps School of Naval Hospital Corps School in Great Lakes, Ill. During the 14-week course, Prieto learned a wide range of medical procedures used to provide first aid and assist Navy doctors and nurses.

Air Force Airman Jesse Barnes has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and customs; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training and special training in human relations.

Barnes is the grandson of Judy Vannatta, Lawrence, and the husband of Jazzmyne Kellogg, Lawrence. He is a 2000 graduate of Lawrence Alternative High School.
