LEAVENWORTH

50-year-old saved, arrested by officers

A Leavenworth man was charged with endangering three officers who saved his life after he set clothes and his room on fire during a domestic dispute.

Ronda Dickerson, 50, was charged Wednesday with four felonies: aggravated arson, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, reckless aggravated battery on an officer and obstructing the legal process.

None of the three officers involved suffered life-threatening injuries, and Dickerson was not hurt. His wife and three children also were taken safely from the home.

Police were called to the home Tuesday to settle a domestic dispute.

“They were confronted with the man pouring gasoline onto clothing and items in the bedroom,” said Leavenworth Police Lt. Patrick L. Kitchens.

Although Dickerson didn’t set himself on fire, “we believe that was the intention,” Kitchens said.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.

Passers-by help catch suspects in mugging

A large crowd helped catch two men after a mugging Wednesday night near the Country Club Plaza.

A man walking in the area around 7 p.m. was jumped by two men. When he yelled for help the men ran off and got into a car, but others who heard the commotion quickly stepped in, with a motorist blocking their car.

Officer Chad Pickens said it was a chaotic scene when police arrived to make the arrests.

“There were three cars that looked like they’d been in some sort of a car wreck, and 15 to 20 people standing around two guys,” he said.

WINFIELD

Festival to be dry, city voters decide

Voters have rejected an effort to allow beer at the Winfield Fairground, although not many residents showed an interest in the issue.

In a special election Tuesday, 21 percent of the voters participated, with 478 supporting a beer garden and 1,069 69.1 percent opposed.

After Rod and Ryan Trowbridge, hosts of the Wheatland Jam festival in July at the Winfield Fairground, raised the question and the city commission decided Winfield voters should decide if beer could be sold during the festival.

The Winfield Ministerial Alliance opposed the measure.
