IN 1977
Lawrence School District 497 was due to take another dive after federal funds for an indoor-outdoor swimming pool were denied. An application submitted in March to the Economic Development Agency was outdated by recent legislation signed by President Jimmy Carter so a revised application was being prepared.
IN 1902
On June 5, 1902, the Lawrence Journal observed: “Topeka has decided that hereafter no married women will be employed as teachers in the public schools. This order will throw several Topeka men suddenly and without warning upon their own resources to make a living. Wouldn’t it have been the fair thing to give them a year’s warning?”
