Mariners finally falter late

? The Baltimore Orioles accomplished what no team had done this season: beat the Seattle Mariners with a late rally.

Geronimo Gil drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning, capping an improbable comeback that gave Baltimore an 8-7 victory Friday night.

Chris Singleton, Tony Batista and Jeff Conine homered for the Orioles, who trailed 5-0 in the third inning and 7-3 in the seventh. It was Conine’s ninth home run of the season and fourth in three games.

John Olerud homered and Ichiro Suzuki had three hits for Seattle. The Mariners were 24-0 when leading after seven innings.

“I don’t think we think we’re ever out of it, even against the best team in the American League,” Conine said.

Conine started the 10th with a single off John Halama (2-1). Marty Cordova then laid down a sacrifice bunt, and a wild throw to first by Halama enabled the runners to move to second and third.

Blue Jays 4, Tigers 2

Detroit Carlos Delgado tripled and homered, driving in three runs to help Toront end a six-game losing streak. Esteban Loaiza (3-1) beat the Tigers for the third time in a row, allowing two runs on nine hits and no walks in 713 innings. Adam Bernero (1-1) took the loss in his second start of the year.

Nomar Garciaparra tripled and scored on a wild pitch from David Wells (6-2) to give Boston the lead in the sixth inning. Jason Varitek hit a two-run double and Tony Clark added a two-run homer as the Red Sox broke the game open in the eighth.

Athletics 13, Devil Rays 9

Tampa Bay Miguel Tejada, Jermaine Dye and Eric Chavez hit consecutive RBI singles during a four-run ninth inning for Oakland. Plate umpire Steve Rippley was taken off the field on a stretcher after being hit in the left temple by a ball in the sixth inning. He was alert and talking as he was taken to the hospital for examination.

Angels 11, Twins 3

Minneapolis Jarrod Washburn won again and each of his teammates had a hit by the fourth inning to lift Anaheim. Bengie Molina went 4-for-5 and Scott Spiezio, Troy Glaus and Benji Gil each drove in two runs for the Angels, who have won 24 of their last 31 games and outscored their opponents 219-107 in that span.
