Storm causes damage

Sixty-to-70 mph winds accompanied much-needed rain Sunday night, but they also caused minor damage in the area.

Shannon McCoy, administrative clerk at Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department, said Monday he had received about 15 calls regarding broken tree limbs.

McCoy said his department would be picking up limbs that had fallen in the city’s right-of-way, which is generally the area between the sidewalk and street. Any other fallen limbs would need to be handled by the homeowner, he said.

Leon Kidd, of 1906 Edgelea Road, did just that Monday morning. He’s pictured above collecting fallen tree branches in his front yard.

Limbs can be taken to the forestry division’s drop-off site from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at 1110 Haskell Ave., McCoy said.

Officials at Westar Energy said Sunday night’s storm left 2,500 customers without power. Officials said southwest Lawrence was the largest area affected. Power was restored about 10 p.m. Sunday.
