Lakeside: Bowyer wins seven, Davis stalls at 11

? Clint Bowyer fended off all challengers on his way to win number seven in the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge Modified division at Lakeside Speedway, July 26.

It took the Emporia, Kan., native 13 laps – after starting sixth – to work his way through the field and successfully pass Kerry Davis for the lead. Davis, K.C., Mo., was able to hook up on the cushion to provide chassis-twisting power, but finally succumbed to the Midwest Region leader while working through lap traffic in turns three and four.

Davis’s luck wasn’t any better in the NASCAR Shortrack Series Grand National Limited Late Models either. The current National Points leader boasted 11 wins out of 13 starts with 13 top-fives entering Friday night’s program, but mechanical failure under the hood would end his current streak.

Coming in with a .1113 lead in the Midwest Region and .0868 lead for the National Title, Davis will lose some ground in his CPI, although the high car count should limit the damage.

Despite a tight car, youngster Mark Shafman was able to hold off the advances of last week’s winner, Allan Lawrence, to record his first career victory in the Grand Nationals. The Edwardsville, Kan., chauffeur lost last week by the narrowest margin of the season to Lawrence.

Lady luck left the building for Factory Stock early leader Darin Edmonds. The McClouth, Kan., driver, looking for his first win of the season, was off to a commanding lead when an apparent left front tie-rod snapped in two, sending him to the pits disappointed.

Darin Christy, K.C., Kan., inherited the lead in the 15-lap feature and never looked back. Despite a last lap attempt at the line by Tim Billings, Christy would add one more to his trophy collection.
