Giants add Lofton to depleted outfield

San Francisco The San Francisco Giants addressed their desperate needs for outfield depth and speed, acquiring six-time All-Star Kenny Lofton from the Chicago White Sox on Sunday for two minor leaguers.

The Giants sent right-hander Felix Diaz and left-hander Ryan Meaux to Chicago in exchange for Lofton, who’s hitting .259 with eight homers, 42 RBIs and 22 stolen bases with the White Sox this season. He’s sixth in the AL in stolen bases and third in triples.

Lofton will be expected to contribute immediately to a San Francisco outfield that was missing Barry Bonds, Reggie Sanders, Tsuyoshi Shinjo and Marvin Benard during a weekend series against Los Angeles because of injuries.

Indians send Shuey to Los Angeles

San Francisco Paul Shuey was traded back into a pennant race Sunday when the Los Angeles Dodgers acquired the right-handed reliever from the Cleveland Indians for three pitchers.

Cleveland got well-traveled left-hander Terry Mulholland the Dodgers’ least-used reliever and minor-league right-handers Ricardo Rodriguez and Francisco Cruceta.

Shuey stayed in Ohio on Sunday. He’ll join the Dodgers before they start a three-game series at Cincinnati on Tuesday night.

No decision yet on Clemens’ status

St. Petersburg, Fla. New York Yankees ace Roger Clemens might make another rehab start before coming off the disabled list.

Clemens threw 92 pitches in a rehabilitation start for Class-A Tampa on Saturday night. He will accompany the team to Texas, where the Yankees open a three-game series today.

The six-time Cy Young Award winner will throw off a bullpen mound before todya’s game.
