Phoenix ? Starting in spring training, Curt Schilling wanted to bring maximum focus into every start.

He’s done that, and more.

Schilling became the fastest pitcher to 18 victories in 26 years when he beat the San Diego Padres, 4-3, Saturday, leading the Arizona Diamondbacks to their sixth consecutive win.

Randy Jones was the last pitcher to win 18 games before Aug. 1, doing it for San Diego in 1976 en route to a Cy Young Award.

“I’ve said it all year and I’m going to keep saying it: We’re playing fantastic baseball on the days that I pitch,” Schilling said. “Today we played some unbelievable defense.”

Erubiel Durazo, activated from the disabled list hours earlier, homered in his first game this month and was in on several strong fielding plays.

Luis Gonzalez drove in his 77th run with a groundout before Durazo hit his ninth homer in 94 at-bats this year a three-run shot during a four-run fifth.

Schilling (18-3) allowed one run and eight hits in eight innings, earning his 12th consecutive win over a division opponent and improving to 16-1 against NL teams.

He has won six straight starts, giving him 150 career wins.

The right-hander fanned seven to finish with 212 strikeouts, best in the majors. He did not walk a batter, leaving him with an incredible 18 wins and 18 walks in 16923 innings over 23 starts.

Schilling has a 2.86 ERA and four more victories than any other pitcher in the majors.

“It’s just phenomenal,” Arizona manager Bob Brenly said. “He doesn’t beat himself, he doesn’t walk anybody, he’s extremely quick to the plate you can’t run on him. Depending on what he’s got working on a given day, he can go at you in a variety of ways.”

Dodgers 5, Giants 1

San Francisco Omar Daal combined with three relievers on a four-hitter, and Adrian Beltre had an RBI triple among his three hits as Los Angeles beat San Francisco. Paul Lo Duca had three hits and scored two runs for the Dodgers, who opened up a two-game wild card lead over the Giants by beating their biggest rivals for the second time in less than 24 hours. Daal (8-5), winless in his previous three starts, didn’t allow a hit through five innings.

Brewers 6, Rockies 5 (10)

Milwaukee Alex Ochoa hit an RBI single in the 10th inning to give Milwaukee a victory against Colorado, sending the Rockies to their fifth consecutive loss. Todd Helton hit a three-run homer for Colorado.

Izzy Alcantara hit a one-out single off Jose Jimenez (2-7) in the 10th, and pinch-runner Eric Young moved to third on Jose Hernandez’s single to right. Ochoa then blooped a single to right for the victory.

Astros 3, Pirates 0

Houston Roy Oswalt pitched eight scoreless innings as Houston blanked Pittsburgh for the second time in three days. After Kirk Saarloos pitched a six-hitter in Houston’s 8-0 win in the series opener on Thursday, Oswalt nearly matched his rookie teammate. Oswalt (11-6) allowed four hits and one walk, striking out nine.

Marlins 7, Expos 2

Montreal Charles Johnson’s three-run homer capped a five-run first inning, and A.J. Burnett struck out a career-high 12 to lead Florida past Montreal. With 19,373 on hand the fourth-largest Olympic Stadium crowd of the season Johnson hit his fifth homer of the season off Tomo Ohka (8-6) to put the Marlins up 5-0.

Reds 2, Mets 1 (11)

New York Pinch-hitter Todd Walker hit a one-out RBI single in the 11th inning, lifting Cincinnati past New York. Walker lined a 2-2 pitch off rookie Jaime Cerda to center to scored Austin Kearns, who doubled off Mark Corey (0-3) to start the inning. After Brandon Larson struck out, Corey walked Kelly Stinnett, who struck out in his first four at-bats. Cerda relieved and yielded Walker’s hit.

Cubs 7, Cardinals 3

St. Louis Kerry Wood allowed one unearned run in six innings and Moises Alou had three RBIs as Chicago snapped a four-game losing streak. Wood (9-5) allowed four hits, one walk and struck out three before leaving after 87 pitches in the 95-degree heat. The Cubs won for just the third time in their past 19 games at Busch Stadium and improved to 9-9 under Bruce Kimm.

Braves 5, Phillies 3

Atlanta Chipper Jones homered, and Greg Maddux bounced back from his first loss in nearly three months as Atlanta beat Philadelphia. Maddux (10-3) allowed one earned run in 523 innings to snap Philadelphia’s four-game winning streak.
