Wheat elevators in western Kansas were brimming after a bountiful harvest but the Douglas County elevators that were full didn’t get that way because of the 1977 harvest. “The wheat is a disaster,” said Earl Van Meter, county extension director. Drought and rains at the wrong times had caused the output here to be far below normal. Thus, many were keeping what grain they had in storage in hopes the price per bushel, presently about $2, might rise and they could get better profits.

A budget that would increase the Eudora tax rate about 47 percent was approved for publication by the city council. The mill rate was to go from 14.53 to 21.269 under the proposal. The big needs were for better police and fire protection and payment of debts on the city swimming pool.

The city commission approved a $3 million calendar 1963 budget, heard an apparent death knell for proposed paving of East 15th and 19th streets and received a report on the problems of the local ambulance service. The city tax levy for 1978 was set at 25.23 mills.

Harold Adamson, songwriter from Lawrence, returned for a visit with members of his family. Among his biggest hits were “Time on My Hands,” and “Everything I Have Is Yours, as well as the famous World War II hit, “Coming in on a Wing and a Prayer.”

IN 1902On July 27, 1902, the Lawrence World noted, “The Lecompton telephone exchange now has 25 subscribers and several other orders in. The people take to telephones. The country will be all connected within a short time.”

The Lawrence World also reported, “Dr. Hults has purchased a new automobile. It arrived today and will begin operations almost any time. This makes the fourth one in Lawrence.”
