Melvin J. Huxtable Jr.

Services for Melvin J. Huxtable Jr., 78, Lawrence, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Plymouth Congregational Church. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Huxtable died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at his home.

He was born March 23, 1924, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Melvin and Ruth (Smith) Huxtable. He graduated in 1940 from Southwest High School in Kansas City, Mo. He attended junior college in Kansas City until joining the Navy in 1942. While on active duty, he received his commission in July 1945. He continued in the inactive Naval Reserves until his discharge in 1956.

Mr. Huxtable received a mechanical engineering degree from Kansas University in 1948. He was in the Delta Chi fraternity and remained an active member.

He purchased Brune Plumbing & Heating Company, which later became Huxtable and Associates. He sold the company in 1984.

Mr. Huxtable was active in the Plumbers’ and Pipe Fitters’ School, Mechanical Contractors of Kansas and Electrical Contractors of Kansas. He was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church, the Kiwanis Club, the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, and a lifetime member of KU Alumni Association.

He married Gayle Raasch on July 16, 1983. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include two daughters, Jill Huxtable, Olathe, and Kathryn Huxtable, Overland Park; a stepson, Kevin Raasch, Lawrence; a brother, Donald E., Prairie Village; two grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

The family suggests memorials to KU Mechanical Engineering Scholarship Fund or a charity of the donor’s choice, sent in care of the mortuary.
