Topeka: E. coli strikes in Kansas

There has been one confirmed case of E. coli illness in southwest Kansas associated with beef recalled by ConAgra Beef Co., the Kansas Department of Health and Environment confirmed.

KDHE spokesman Mike Heideman said Tuesday the agency still is investigating how the person was infected, but laboratory tests have confirmed the beef was connected with the recall.

“We know the genetic strains match, but in terms of the specific way they came in contact, that is still being investigated,” he said.

Heideman said state law prohibits the agency from identifying the person or saying in which county the incident occurred.

Last week, ConAgra recalled 19 million pounds of contaminated meat and said it would pay medical costs for E. coli victims sickened by the same bacteria strain as the recalled meat.

MedAct ambulance officials described the 20-year-old cashier’s respiratory injuries as moderate and the 24-year-old manager’s injuries as minor.

Hazardous-materials workers told firefighters they found about a half-gallon of hydrochloric acid spilled onto the floor.

Kansas City, Kan.: Officers cleared in fatal shooting

Two police officers who fatally shot a man and wounded a bystander have been cleared of wrongdoing and have returned to duty, police said Monday.

Jason Simmons, 23, of Riverside, was killed and a woman was injured by police in May in a restaurant parking lot near the Kansas-Missouri state line.

Kansas City, Kan., police have said Simmons pulled a firearm from his waistband and pointed it at officers when they ordered him to get out of a car. The officers were trying to serve Simmons with a warrant.
