Renegades win pair at World Series

? Lawrence’s Renegades are off to a 2-0 start in the USSSA World Series.

The Renegades nudged Maywood, Ill., 7-6, and slammed Beaver Creek, Ohio, 9-1, in a five-inning run-rule game Monday at the 16-team, 17-and-under age-group tournament.

In the opener, the Renegades led, 7-2, entering the seventh inning.

Spence Chaney entered in relief of Seth Johnson with a man on base and two out.

Chaney hit one Maywood batter with a pitch, then struck out the next batter to end the contest.

“We played a very athletic team in Maywood. We were down 2-0, battled back, led, they battled back  but we were able to close it out,” Renegades coach Lynn Harrod said. “That was a great win against a very good team, one of the best teams I’ve seen this year.”

Devon Myers was the hitting star in the opener with two hits and five RBIs. Cal Heinrich was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Carl Lisher contributed two hits.

In the second game, the Renegades plated eight runs in the second inning.

Myers was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Heinrich had a triple and three RBIs to support Ryne Jackson (6-1).

The Renegades, 2-0 at the tourney and 22-12 overall, meet Kentucky’s state champion team at 4:15 p.m. today.

“We were a little lethargic to start the second game, then popped an 8-spot on ’em,” Harrod said. “We never looked back. We were very relaxed and the kids are seeming to have a lot of fun. We finish pool play tomorrow and get seeded. I anticipate we’ll be in the championship bracket.”
