Peter Max’s art again to grace stamps

The imaginative hand of Peter Max again is being displayed in the stamp world.

The world-famed artist has created a set of 12 stamp designs for the United Nations to herald “Johannesburg Summit 2002 the world meeting on sustainable development.” The summit will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa, from Aug. 26 to Sept. 4.

The Johannesburg Summit will bring together thousands of participants, heads of state, government organizations and world leaders to focus the world’s attention and direct action that will improve people’s lives, conserve natural resources and provide better health services to all, says the United Nations.

The designs by Max feature a variety of scones showing people banding together in harmony, a world globe emanating sunshine for all and a ship sailing on a calm sea.

Max’s art work has appeared on previous UN issues including the Earth Summit Conference set. The conference was held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. He also designed the first “Preserve the Summit” stamp for the U.S. Postal Service in 1974.

Max is well-known in the sports world, too. He has been the official artist for five Super Bowls, the Olympics, World Cup USA and the National Hockey League All-Star Game.

First-day cancellations of the stamps can be obtained by calling a credit card order to (800)-234-UNPA.
