State softball meet to start here tonight

More than 40 girls softball teams will take over the Clinton Lake Sports Complex and Youth Sports Inc. fields this weekend for the State U-14 Class C tournament.

Games are scheduled on the four CLSC and two YSI fields tonight, Saturday and Sunday. The tourney will begin at 5 p.m. with games scheduled through 11:15 p.m. On Saturday, games are slated from 8 a.m. though 11 p.m. at all six fields.

The championship game is scheduled for 4:45 p.m. Sunday at CLSC No. 1 diamond. Two Lawrence teams are entered Lady Thunder and Phenix-Tanner.

Washburn inks Kaw

Shawn Howard, a May graduate of Perry-Lecompton High, has signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Washburn University. Howard batted .533 for the Kaws last spring with eight home runs and 45 RBI.

Olathe golfer wins at Eagle Bend

Michael Schnegelberger of Olathe shot rounds of 74 and 73 to win the boys division of the Kansas Independent Insurance Agent Junior Classic on Thursday at Eagle Bend. He advances to the national meet Aug. 12 in Houston.

Jon Moseley of Lawrence finished seven strokes back with a two-round total of 154, and Scott Moseley carded a 160.
