WNBA Roundup: Monarchs claim first road win in 11 attempts

? Tangela Smith led four Sacramento players in double figures with 18 points, helping the Monarchs beat the Miami Sol, 78-62, Wednesday for their first win in 11 road games.

Kedra Holland-Corn scored 17, Yolanda Griffith 14 and Ruthie Bolton 13 off the bench as Sacramento ended Miami’s four-game winning streak and prevented the Sol from reaching .500 for the first time this season.

Miami had won seven of eight games before the All-Star break.

The 78 points are the most Miami has allowed all season.

Reserve Betty Lennox led the Sol with 18 points.

The Monarchs led 36-29 at halftime. They entered the game as the WNBA’s worst shooting team (37.8 percent), but outshot the Sol 50 percent to 37.3 percent.

Fire 73, Mercury 61

Portland, Ore. DeMya Walker scored 17 points and Alisa Burras added 10 as Portland beat Phoenix, the Mercury’s 16th consecutive road loss, tying a WNBA record. Phoenix has not won a road game since last July 27 at Seattle. Portland won for the eighth time in nine games. The Fire had a seven-game winning skid snapped Friday by Los Angeles.

Starzz 75, Comets 67

Salt Lake City Margo Dydek overcame a first-half knee injury to score 17 points and grab 14 rebounds for Utah. With 6:20 left in the first half, Dydek strained her left knee as Grace Daley crashed awkwardly into her on a drive. Dydek was whistled for a foul and then limped off the court. Marie Ferdinand scored 20 points and Jennifer Azzi added 17 to help Utah to its fifth victory in six games.

Sparks 73, Fever 58

Indianapolis Mwadi Mabika had 27 points and 10 rebounds and Lisa Leslie, playing through foul trouble, added 14 points and 14 rebounds to lead Los Angeles over Indiana. Leslie, coming off her All-Star game MVP performance, was called for three fouls in the first 2 minutes of the second half, giving her five and sending her to the bench for over 10 minutes.

Rockers 58, Lynx 48

Minneapolis Ann Wauters scored 14 points and Cleveland used a 10-0 run in each half to beat Minnesota, the Lynx’s sixth straight loss. The game was the first for former assistant Heidi VanDerveer, who replaced Brain Agler as coach of the Lynx on Tuesday. Agler resigned as coach but retained his position as general manager.

Sting 89, Miracle 62

Charlotte, N.C. Tammy Sutton-Brown scored a career-high 22 points and the Charlotte Sting made a strong statement to start the second half of the season. Andrea Stinson had 13 points and eight assists, Allison Feaster scored 13 points and Dawn Staley added 11 points and eight assists for the Sting (12-9).
