Leavenworth ? Police said the body of a woman was found early Monday in a van that witnesses said sped down a Leavenworth boat ramp Sunday into the Missouri River.

The name of the dead woman was not released.

Police were told that the van drifted in the river for about 200 feet, then went under. They were investigating the circumstances.

One man who saw the incident, Robert Cochran, said people were on their cell phones calling for help after the van went into the water about 7:45 p.m. He said there was nothing witnesses could do.

“It was a smooth sink,” Cochran told KCTV of Kansas City. “It went straight on in. It didn’t take long.”
