Philadelphia ? Under virtual house arrest since Thursday, Allen Iverson is expected to surrender to police today to face charges that he threatened two men while armed with a handgun.

The 76ers guard is likely to spend a day in custody waiting to be arraigned and then released, said municipal court Judge Seamus P. McCaffery.

Details of the surrender were to be worked out between police and Iverson’s attorney, Richard A. Sprague, who was scheduled to return to Philadelphia late Monday from a trip to Europe.

Iverson, 27, will turn himself in at Police Headquarters at Eighth and Race Streets in Center City, or at detective headquarters in Center City or West Philadelphia, police said.

Under an agreement with Sprague, Police Commissioner Sylvester M. Johnson allowed Iverson to stay at his Gladwyne mansion on Monk Road until he had a chance to confer with Sprague. The deal between Johnson and Sprague called for Iverson to surrender today.

“I’m sure that he’s a man of his word,” Johnson said of Sprague late Monday afternoon.

Sprague’s law firm declined to comment.

Although some critics have accused the police of giving Iverson special treatment in allowing him to avoid arrest over the weekend, Iverson today is expected to enter Philadelphia’s criminal-justice system and wait in line like everybody else, authorities said.

After surrendering, Iverson will hand over his personal effects, including shoelaces and belt, if he is wearing them, for safety reasons.

He will be fingerprinted, photographed and then interviewed for basic personal and health information. Then he will sit in a holding cell.

On Wednesday, he is expected to have his arraignment via closed-circuit television..

A bail commissioner will set bail, or release Iverson with just a signature and no money posted, McCaffery said. Iverson will be told to appear for a preliminary hearing, tentatively set for Monday, at the Criminal Justice Center, McCaffery said.

Then he will be released.

Iverson faces charges of false imprisonment, criminal trespass, conspiracy, firearms violations, and other offenses. He faces a maximum 70 years in prison, an unlikely sentence.

Authorities allege that Iverson and an uncle entered an apartment at 6235 Chestnut St. July 3 while searching for his wife, Tawanna, 26, and his cousin Shaun T. Bowman. Authorities say, Iverson encountered Charles Jones, 21, who shared the apartment with Bowman.

A neighbor, Hakim Carey, 17, was also in the apartment.

In an affidavit, police stated that “Iverson showed the complainants a black handgun in his waistband and made numerous threats at the complainants.”
