Royals to meet with top pick

? Kansas City Royals scouting director Deric Ladnier said he will meet today with first-round draft pick Zack Greinke and his agent, Mike Milchen.

Greinke, a right-handed pitcher, was 9-2 with a 0.55 earned run average while striking out 118 and walking only eight in 63 innings as a senior with Apopka (Fla.) High School. The Royals used the sixth overall selection on Greinke.

“I think there’s a mutual understanding with both parties on where we are,” Ladnier said. “The numbers (for bonuses) have gone down for the first time in the history of the draft. Not significantly down, but down.”

The Royals are believed to be offering Greinke, who also has a baseball scholarship to Clemson, around $2.4 million.

If Greinke signs within the next few days, he would likely begin his professional career with the Royals’ affiliate in the Gulf Coast League in Haines City, Fla.
