Investigation: Officials say apartment fire was electrical in origin

Investigators from the Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical Department have determined it was an electrical fire that originated in a refrigerator that damaged part of a maintenance shed at Meadowbrook Apartments late Friday.

Battalion Chief Bill Stark said investigators were still finishing up paperwork, but they had completed the investigation of the fire scene.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical responded at 8:37 p.m. Friday to a report of a possible fire in the 200 block of Bristol Terrace, Stark said.

But upon arrival late Friday, firefighters found the east end of a one-story, wood-frame shop located at 100 Regency Place at the east end of the 42-building apartment complex engulfed in heavy fire. Firefighters brought the blaze under control by 9:07 p.m.

Damage to the building was estimated at $150,000, Stark said.
