Red Sox drop 7-3 decision in 10 innings

? The Boston Red Sox couldn’t wait to see interleague play end. The Atlanta Braves are sorry to see it go.

Keith Lockhart doubled in the game-winner during a four-run 10th inning as the Braves beat Boston, 7-3, Sunday to sweep the Red Sox and win for the 10th time in 11 games.

Arizona's Curt Schilling delivers against Cleveland. Schilling earned his major league-leading 13th victory in the Diamondbacks' 5-2 victory over the Indians on Sunday in Cleveland.

For the year, Atlanta went 15-3 in interleague play and Boston went 5-13.

“Those teams really stuck it to us,” said Red Sox outfielder Johnny Damon, whose team lost for the seventh time in eight games. “They have our respect. Good thing they’re gone.”

Atlanta led 3-0 before Brian Daubach, Trot Nixon and Nomar Garciaparra hit solo homers to tie it.

Darren Bragg singled with one out in the 10th his third hit of the day and one out later Lockhart fouled off three pitches with two strikes before looping one down the right-field line to give Atlanta the lead.

“It was a big hit,” Lockhart said. “It put us ahead and the guys followed behind us. that was certainly enough for this bullpen.”

Rafael Furcal made it 5-3 with a single on the 52nd pitch of the day from Ugueth Urbina (0-3), who is usually a one-inning closer. Willie Banks allowed singles to Julio Franco and Gary Sheffield before Chipper Jones reached and Franco scored when Banks botched a throw to first.

Urbina pitched 12/3 innings, allowing three earned runs, three hits and two walks.

Mike Remlinger (5-0) earned the victory with two strikeouts in one inning. The Braves won their 11th consecutive series and improved to 12-3 in the interleague era in Boston, the franchise’s home for its first five decades before it moved to Milwaukee and then Atlanta.

Yankees 8, Mets 0

New York Andy Pettitte pitched a three-hitter to win for the first time since April 5, and All-Star second baseman Alfonso Soriano homered as the New York Yankees beat the New York Mets. Soriano and John Vander Wal each drove in two runs for the Yankees, who took two of three in this edition of the Subway Series. The crosstown rivals split six games this year. One night after the Mets had 16 hits in an 11-2 rout, Pettitte (2-2) set them down with ease for his third career shutout and first since June 29, 2000, at Detroit.

D’backs 5, Indians 2

Cleveland Curt Schilling gained his major league-leading 13th win and first in four starts with a five-hitter Sunday, leading Arizona past Cleveland. Schilling (13-3) cruised from the opening pitch, and earned his first victory since June 8 and first complete game in 16 starts. Junior Spivey homered and the Diamondbacks took advantage of some early wildness by starter Danys Baez (6-6), who walked four in the first inning and didn’t get through the fourth. Jim Thome hit his 24th homer and Ellis Burks homered for the struggling Indians.

Athletics 7, Giants 0

Oakland, Calif. Tim Hudson pitched a five-hitter for his third career shutout as Oakland beat San Francisco. Scott Hatteberg had three hits and drove in three runs as the A’s won for the second time in six games. Hudson (6-7) won for the third time in four decisions after going 0-4 in his previous eight starts. Russ Ortiz (6-5), who was 2-0 in his previous five starts, lasted five-plus innings.

Blue Jays 7, Expos 5

Toronto Carlos Delgado hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the seventh inning as Toronto beat Montreal in what was possibly the final game between the Canadian teams. The Blue Jays improved to 18-13 all-time against the Expos.

Angels 5, Dodgers 1

Anaheim, Calif. Benji Gil, who hasn’t drawn a walk all season, homered on a 3-0 pitch against first-time All-Star Odalis Perez as Anaheim beat Los Angeles to give John Lackey his first career victory. Lackey (1-1) allowed one run and five hits in six innings, striking out one, walking three and hitting a batter. It was his first start since replacing the ineffective Scott Schoeneweis in the rotation.

Cubs 9, White Sox 2

Chicago Matt Clement shut down the surging White Sox offense, and Mark Bellhorn homered from both sides of the plate as the Cubs avoided a sweep by their crosstown rivals. Clement (6-5) scattered two runs and six hits over eight-plus innings, and matched his career high with 12 strikeouts. Bellhorn hit a two-run, right-handed shot in the five-run sixth. He hit a solo shot in the ninth left-handed.

Rockies 4, Mariners 3

Seattle Todd Hollandsworth hit a game-tying double in the ninth and Todd Zeile scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly as Colorado beat Seattle to break a five-game losing streak. Larry Walker had a season-high four hits for the Rockies and Justin Speier (3-0) pitched the eighth, yielding a walk. He was also called for a balk

Phillies 8, Orioles 5

Baltimore Scott Rolen had three hits and three RBIs as Philadelphia rallied from four runs down to beat Baltimore. Robert Person (3-4) pitched five innings for his 50th career victory. Person allowed four runs, five hits and a career-high seven walks. Jose Mesa pitched the ninth for his 200th career save and 20th this year. He becomes the 29th reliever to reach that plateau. Rolen tied the game with an RBI single off Rick Bauer (3-4) before errors by second baseman Brian Roberts and reliever Yorkis Perez on consecutive plays put Philadelphia ahead by two runs.

Devil Rays 6, Marlins 5 (12)

Tampa Bay Brent Abernathy’s RBI single snapped a 12th-inning tie and gave Tampa Bay a victory over Florida. Abernathy entered the game in the 10th as a pinch-runner and his game-winning hit with one out in the 12th scored Steve Cox, who opened the bottom of the inning with a double off Vladimir Nunez (4-3). The Devil Rays overcame a 4-0 deficit against Florida starter A.J. Burnett to take the season series between the intrastate rivals for the first time. Esteban Yan (4-3) pitched the 12th.

Twins 4, Brewers 3

Minneapolis Luis Vizcaino walked Dustan Mohr to force in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning then balked in another run as Minnesota beat Milwaukee. The Twins ended the career-high 181/3-inning scoreless streak of Glendon Rusch (5-6). Eric Milton (9-6) allowed two runs and four hits in eight innings to get the win. He matched his season high with eight strikeouts. Eddie Guardado pitched the ninth for his 24th save in 26 opportunities.

Pirates 6, Tigers 2

Detroit Rob Mackowiak had two hits and scored twice and Brian Giles homered as Pittsburgh beat Detroit. Kris Benson (2-4) won back-to-back starts for the first time since September of 2000, allowing one run and six hits in 62/3 innings. Benson, who missed the entire 2001 season after elbow surgery, walked one and struck out one. Mike Williams came in with two runners on and got the final three outs for his 23rd save.
