Huskers bury Bears with 3-point barrage – Nebraska 75, Baylor 55

? Nebraska’s Cary Cochran saved his best for his last regular season game in the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

The senior guard from Minden, Iowa, hit a single-game school record eight three-point field goals, six of them in the first half, scored a career-high 27 points and tied his career high with seven rebounds to lead Nebraska over Baylor, 75-55, on Wednesday night.

“It was a great feeling,” Cochran said. “I was really expecting to be more emotional.

“Nebraska’s been very good to me. It was just a great way to go out.”

The previous single-game mark was seven three-pointers, held by three players, including Cochran.

The Cornhuskers have been hot of late. Nebraska made 18 of 37 three-pointers on Sunday in an 88-87 loss to Kansas at Lincoln. Cochran was 6 of 12 in that game.

Nebraska hit 13 three-pointers Wednesday night out of 27 total field goals.

“We ran some different types of defenses to try to defend the three-point shooting tonight,” said Baylor coach Dave Bliss. “You can leave them open and think that they are going to have a poor shooting night. Cochran is one of the very best shooters. We left him open too many times.”

Besides breaking the single -game record, Cochran set a new Nebraska season three-point field goal record. His total is 81 with at least two games remaining.

The previous single-season record was 78 held by Cochran in 2001 and Tyronn Lue in 1998.

Nebraska (13-13, 6-9 Big 12) trailed Baylor (14-14, 4-11) 19-12 when Wendell Greenleaf hit a three-pointer with 12:22 left in the first half.

But the Bears made just one more field goal in the rest of the period.

The Cornhuskers closed the half with a 23-4 run, powered by four three-pointers by Cochran.

Nebraska made eight three-point shots in the first half, hitting 47 percent of its long-range shots to take a 35-23 halftime lead. Baylor made only 26 percent of its first-half shots.

The Bears cut the Nebraska lead to eight points early in the first half, but Nebraska quickly pushed the margin back to 18.

Baylor again rallied and came within 10 points on Greenleaf’s three-pointer with 6:36 left.

The Huskers then put together a 12-2 run to open up a 20 point gap, their largest lead of the game.

“I would not have expected a 20-point win,” said Nebraska coach Barry Collier. “It’s a great way for the seniors to cap off their home season.”
