Car strikes parked truck; teen driver treated at LMH

A teen-age girl was injured Wednesday morning when the car she was driving struck the back of a parked, tractor trailer in the 4100 block of West 15th Street, Lawrence Police reported.

Emily D. Hierl, 16, Lawrence, was taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where she was treated and released, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Hierl was driving a 1993 Mazda 626 eastbound on 15th Street when the collision occurred, police said.

The tractor trailer, a 1989 Volvo, was unattended and parked along the eastbound side of the street with its flashers on, police reported. It was owned by North American Van Lines, Fort Wayne, Ind. The driver responsible for the truck was identified as Jon Taggart, 37. No hometown was listed.

The accident was still under investigation late Wednesday.

Baker University to explore ‘ultimate frontier’ today

Students and teachers will get a glimpse of careers in space exploration today at Rice Auditorium at Baker University.

Baker University will offer a daylong program, “Exploration of the Ultimate Frontier,” to give high school students and their upper-level mathematics, science and computer science teachers the opportunity to explore different careers.

Retired Adm. Richard Truly, a former astronaut who works at Midwest Research Institute, will present “An Astronaut’s View of the Earth.” Chuck Groetsch, a University of Cincinnati professor, will present “The Physics of the Electric Guitar.”

Students ask for class on starting a business

Two organizations at Kansas University will have a forum Friday to lobby for an entrepreneurial class for nonbusiness majors.

Leaders of Students in Free Enterprise and Collegiate Entrepreneurs’ Organization want administrators to create a class to teach students in other schools basics of starting a business.

The forum will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the English Room of the Kansas Union, with dinner and breakout sessions from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Abe & Jake’s Landing, 8 E. Sixth St.
