Stamp set promotes 50 states

“Greetings From America” a postal invitation to the world will be depicted on new U.S. stamps starting April 4.

The colorful and creative panel of 50 stamps will feature scenes from each of the 50 states as an invitation to see the beauty of the United States state by state. This stamp set is the first issuance of a pane of 50 stamps in 10 years. In 1992, the Postal Service released a pane of 50, displaying wildflowers of the United States.

Inspired by the retro large-letter postcards that were used to advertise cities, states or tourist attractions of the 1930s and ’40s, artist Lonnie Busch combined flora and fauna with local points of interest into colorful collages that celebrate the character of each state.

The text on the flipside of the backing paper of each self-adhesive “Greetings From America” stamp lists the state’s bird, flower, tree and capital, as well as the date it entered the Union.

For example, California’s illustration reveals a scene of palm trees on Santa Catalina Island, a view of the Bay Bridge and the skyline of San Francisco, plus the California poppy, the state’s official flower.

Official first-day-of-issue ceremonies for the new stamps will be held April 4 in every state’s capital city. An additional ceremony will take place at the Postage Stamp Mega-Event Stamp Show in New York City, which opens that day.
