 Courts: Suspect guilty of charges related to DeSoto shooting

Olathe  After deliberating a little more than three hours, a jury on Thursday found a DeSoto man guilty of charges related to the September shooting death of a DeSoto woman.

A Johnson County District Court jury found Juan Crutchfield, 22, guilty of aggravated battery, domestic battery and criminal restraint. He was found innocent on a charge of intimidating a witness. A date for sentencing has not been set.

On Sept. 4, 2001, Melanie Oliver was shot and killed as she slept in her DeSoto home.

Crutchfield also is charged with first-degree murder. His preliminary hearing on that charge is set for March 26.

Last month, a jury was unable to reach a verdict in the trial of a second suspect. Jesse Guardado, 18, Edwardsville, will be retried at a later date on a charge of first-degree murder.

The trial date for a third suspect, Alfredo Arambula, 18, Kansas City, Kan., has yet to be set. He also was charged with first-degree murder.

 Remembrances: Memorial service to honor teen killed in crash last year

A year after 18-year-old Lawrence High School student Joshua Shuckahosee was killed in an automobile accident, a second memorial service is scheduled to celebrate his life.

The service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lawrence Christian Center, 1031 N.H. More than 100 people are expected to attend.

Shuckahosee died Feb. 8, 2001, when the Ford Ranger pickup he was driving struck a utility pole at the intersection of Clinton Parkway and Lawrence Avenue. He was born May 15, 1982, to Jay and Loretta Shuckahosee. He was a member of the Kickapoo Tribe of Kansas and also was part Navajo and part Sac and Fox.

Joshua Shuckahosee attended Lawrence High School, where he had been a member of the wrestling team. He also worked part time at his father’s Lawrence drywall business.

 Kansas University: Disney animator to speak at Spencer Museum of Art

A Disney animator will speak at 6 p.m. Monday at Kansas University’s Helen Foresman Spencer Museum of Art.

Jack Lew, senior manager of artist and professional development at Disney Feature Animation in Orlando, Fla., will discuss his work overseeing animation training and educational programs for Disney.

Before going to Disney, Lew taught at the Kansas City Art Institute and worked as an illustrator and graphic designer.

The presentation is part of KU’s Hallmark Symposium series. Anne Currier, professor of ceramic arts at Alfred University in New York, will speak for the series at 6 p.m. Feb. 25.
