Jack Connolly and 15 of his friends want to do your taxes.

And all you have to do is ask.

"We're ready to go," he said.

Beginning today, Connolly and his fellow tax-counseling volunteers will set up inside the Lawrence Senior Center, 745 Vt., to help people file their income taxes.

From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays through April 11, AARP's Tax Counseling for the Elderly program will provide free assistance on a first-come, first-served basis.

Program rules say that people receiving help should be low- to moderate-income senior citizens, but the terms are not defined. That means volunteer take anyone coming through the door, provided their returns aren't related to a business or otherwise too complicated.

Filers should bring all relevant tax information  such as W-2 forms, 1099s and pension and Social Security documents  along with copies of 2000 tax returns.

Beginning next week, sessions also will be offered from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays at 235 S. Main in Ottawa, and elsewhere in the area by appointment. Call Connolly at 865-3985 or Kenneth A. Rowen, the program's district director, at 842-8847 for more information.

Kansas University law students also are volunteering to provide free tax-filing services this year.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program helps low-income, elderly, disabled or non-English speaking people file their state and federal income-tax returns.
