Lawrence High senior Relle Dye tries to avoid a pin against Lansing's Joseph Irwin in the 138-pound semifinals match of the Eudora Tournament of Champions on Saturday. Dye lost, 8-0.

In visible pain, Lawrence High senior Relle Dye had to take an extra few seconds to collect himself before heading into the last two minutes of his final wrestling match Saturday.

Dye already had a six-point lead and once he started the final round, he did more than enough to secure fifth place at 138 pounds in the Eudora Tournament of Champions at Eudora High.

Afterward, Dye said the pain was a “10” after taking a kick, but he was hoping to wrestle a little bit better throughout the day. He posted a 2-2 record, losing in the semifinals to undefeated Lansing sophomore Joseph Irwin by an 8-0 decision. Dye lost to Irwin last week at a tournament in Leavenworth.

“I got beat twice in matches I shouldn’t have lost,” Dye said. “It’s just focusing in. I need to key in more in practice and get conditioned more.”

Lawrence High senior Relle Dye pushes against Lansing's Joseph Irwin in the 138-pound semifinals of the Eudora Tournament of Champions Saturday. Dye lost the match, 8-0.

Dye, who is still working his way into shape from the football season, showed off some those similar instincts that helped him at linebacker. He used his strength and quickness to his advantage when he wanted to be aggressive.

“My shots basically are the best thing I have going for me,” Dye said.

Lawrence was a little shorthanded because of ACT testing and injuries, entering only eight wrestlers into the tournament. Freshman Logan Farrell was fourth at 106 pounds and senior Reggie Clemons took fifth at 145.

Clemons, a transfer from Arkansas, posted a 2-2 record while winning both of his matches by pinfall.

“Coming from Arkansas, it’s a whole different style. It’s a whole different deal,” LHS coach Pat Naughton said. “That first weekend, it was kind of a culture shock to him. There were a lot of things that we do here that they don’t do in Arkansas.

“The more he starts to feel comfortable with where he’s at, the more his talent and his skill will come out.”

Even with a few wrestlers missing from the lineup, Naughton said the Eudora tournament provided valuable experience for his younger wrestlers. Plus, it was a chance to transfer new moves from practice into a match.

“We’ll take what we got from this,” Naughton said. “We had six kids place in the top seven. It’s not a bad day. It wasn’t a great day, but it was still OK for us.”

Kennedy wins title at 160

Eudora High senior Elijah Kennedy took first place at 160 pounds Saturday in his home tournament.

Kennedy won his first three matches by pinfall before outlasting Emporia’s Anthony Delgado in the championship by a 5-4 decision. Kennedy improved his record this season to 7-1.

Eudora freshman Cael Lynch was runner-up at 138 pounds while junior Hagan Andrews placed third at 132.
