Letter from principal to Central Junior High parents about fire

The following is a letter sent home Monday to Central Junior High School parents from Principal Ted Juneau about the investigation of a fire at the school.

February 4, 2002

Dear Parents, Staff, and Students,

I would like to make you aware that Lawrence/Douglas County Fire and
Medical Services and Lawrence Police Department personnel were at Central
Junior High today investigating signs that indicate a small fire had taken
place in a mechanical room. A custodian discovered this morning some minor
smoke damage near a boiler. Authorities searched the building. No other
safety concerns were present.

Local authorities also have contacted the State Fire Marshall’s Office for
assistance in the investigation of the cause and origin of the fire. This
is a routine practice when a public building, like a school, is involved.

We don’t feel the safety of students and staff was compromised in any way.
It appears that the fire took place when the building was vacant. We
simply wanted you to be aware of this investigation. As a district, we are
cooperating fully with authorities and appreciate their professional
assistance with this matter.

If you have questions or information to share with school administrators,
please call Brian McCaffrey, assistant principal, or myself at Central,
832-5400. We would encourage the use of the local CrimeStoppers Hotline
(843-TIPS) by anyone having information that may assist in the
investigation.

Sincerely,

Ted Juneau
Principal
