Auto-shop fire kills one

? A fire at a Kansas City auto-body shop killed a 20-year-old man who worked there, officials said.

Investigators said Thursday afternoon’s blaze appeared to be accidental and may have been caused by gasoline that was ignited. Several workers escaped the fire, but officials did not say how many people were inside the building at the time.

Firefighters found the victim, Ben Perkins, in a bathroom area. He apparently was trapped in an area of heavy flames, said Germane Friends, a Fire Department spokesman.

“When the others were running out of the building, they said they saw him turn around and run the other way,” Friends said.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, flames had spread through much of the single-story structure.

Firefighters had the blaze under control in about 30 minutes.
