KU caps 9-11 donation at more than $50,000

Kansas University is capping its Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund drive with a final donation of $3,000, bringing KU’s total contribution to $50,672.

The fund, which was created by former U.S. Sen. Bob Dole and former President Bill Clinton, provides educational assistance for family members of victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The scholarship fund reached its goal of $100 million in September and now stands at $113 million.

The largest contribution came from sales of lapel pins at the KU Bookstores. The $3 pins were fashioned after a “Fighting Jayhawk” logo created for the university by the late Gene “Yogi” Williams of El Dorado in 1941 and featured the words “United We Stand.”

KU’s earlier contributions came from sales of $10 T-shirts with the “Fighting Jayhawk” logo. Proceeds from both items were designated for the fund.

Securing federal grants focus of workshop at KU

People in the humanities community from throughout the Midwest will gather next month at Kansas University to learn how to apply for grants.

The National Endowment for the Humanities Regional Proposal Development Workshop will run Jan. 13 and 14. It is sponsored by KU’s Hall Center for the Humanities.

The event, open to scholars, creative writers or anyone else in the humanities, helps researchers develop proposals for grants. Kenneth Kolson, deputy director of the NEH’s division of research programs, will conduct programs and meet one-on-one with attendees who submit a paper.

Speech-Language honorees have KU ties

Four researchers with ties to Kansas University have been honored by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Assn.

Two researchers received the association’s Award of Excellence. They are James E. McLean, professor emeritus at KU and adjunct professor at the University of North Carolina, and Lawrence D. Shriberg, a KU graduate.

McLean’s research has led to the development of assessment and intervention procedures for children with severe disabilities. Shriberg has worked on communicative disorders at the University of Wisconsin.

Two KU faculty members also received fellowship awards from the association. Sara Dale Brandt, director of rehabilitative services at the KU Medical Center, and Diane Frome Loeb, associate professor of speech-language-hearing, received the honor.

Meeting to kick off development campaign

Kansas University Chancellor Robert Hemenway and Marilyn Dobski, who owns McDonald’s franchises in Lawrence, will lead an economic development campaign charted by the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce.

The two will be hosts of a breakfast and informational meeting kicking off “Excellence by Design,” a countywide initiative developed with input from Douglas County’s top business and civic leaders, including KU.

The breakfast will begin at 7:30 a.m. Jan. 9 in the Kansas Room of the Kansas Union.

Through the program, the chamber hopes to raise $1.2 million from public and private investors to affect economic growth in the area.

The money will be used to support existing businesses as they expand and to recruit targeted businesses and industries with the ability to strengthen the Lawrence economy.
