Old home town – 40 and 100 years ago today

IN 1962 – Local merchants had been hit hard by a rash of bad checks, and Sheriff Fred Broeker warned everyone to be on the lookout for “a clever group of professionals working the area and taking advantage of the holiday spirit.”

IN 1902 – From the Lawrence Daily World of Dec. 23, 1902: “Ben Hoskinson reportedly has aspirations for sheriff in two years. He is serving his fourth term as county commissioner and has a wide acquaintance…. The Indians are good shoppers. They all have money and never quibble over price. The officers at Haskell are ready to protect them against extortion so that there is not much of an incentive for them to worry about price. However, some dealers will load them up with unnecessaries if they are inclined to do so. . . . There is every evidence that the community is heading for a wondrous Christmas.”
