Lions’ Harrington out for season

Detroit – Rookie quarterback Joey Harrington will miss the rest of the season for the Detroit Lions because of an irregular heartbeat.

Harrington, the No. 3 overall draft pick out, left Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay with the heart problem and was taken to the hospital for tests and observation.

He was expected to be released from hospital Monday night.

Doctors said Harrington’s heartbeat returned to a normal rhythm before he was hospitalized. Lions coach Marty Mornhinweg said the ailment is not career-threatening.

“I am 100-percent sure that he is going to be 100-percent fine,” Mornhinweg said. “We are planning for Joey to be taking part in our offseason program within a few weeks. This is something that his father and uncle both have, and something that I’ve coached players with.”

Eagles’ QB Feeley to start against Dallas

Philadelphia – A.J. Feeley will get at least one more start for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Feeley, who has led the NFC East champion Eagles to three straight victories, will be under center for Saturday night’s game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Feeley has played well since replacing Koy Detmer, who went down with a dislocated left elbow in his only start filling in for Donovan McNabb, out with a broken left ankle.

Canidate would start if Rams’ Faulk can’t

St. Louis – Trung Canidate has a chance to start this week ahead of struggling rookie Lamar Gordon if Marshall Faulk still is limited.

Faulk hasn’t started in five games because of a high ankle sprain. Faulk had 39 yards on nine carries and two catches for seven yards Sunday night against the Cardinals.

Canidate, the Rams’ first-round pick in 2000, has 46 yards on 14 carries this season, but coach Mike Martz said he’s had a better attitude lately.

“Trung is really a tough guy and he’s got such a great attitude right now,” Martz said. “He just deserves that opportunity.”

Jaguars’ fullback hurting

Jacksonville, Fla. – Fullback Patrick Washington probably is out for the season with a third-degree sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his knee.

Bostic to have surgery

Orchard Park, N.Y. – Buffalo Bills cornerback Jason Bostic tore ligaments in his right knee, and probably will miss the rest of the season. Bostic is scheduled to have reconstructive surgery on Wednesday, coach Gregg Williams said Monday. Bostic was hurt during a punt return late in the third quarter of Sunday’s 20-13 win over San Diego.

Davis might be done playing for Redskins

Ashburn, Va. – Running back Stephen Davis probably is out for the season with a separated right shoulder, which could spell the end of his career with the Redskins.

Davis was injured Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles and was re-examined Monday. He is definitely out for this Sunday’s game against Houston and might not play in the season finale against Dallas.

Falcons QB Vick shouldn’t miss any time

Flowery Branch, Ga. – Atlanta Falcons coach Dan Reeves does not expect Michael Vick to miss practice time this week because of a slightly swollen left thumb.

“A lot’s going to depend on how he comes in Wednesday,” Reeves said Monday. “I think there’s a good chance that he could be OK.”

Vick was injured after jamming his hand against another player’s facemask in the second quarter of Atlanta’s 30-24 overtime loss to Seattle.

Reeves also said that cornerback Ray Buchanan has become a liability in the secondary because of a sore abdomen.

Vikings’ Kelly out

Eden Prairie, Minn. – Minnesota placed offensive lineman Lewis Kelly on injured reserve Monday with a hernia.

Raiders’ Woodson says he’ll play this weekend

Alameda, Calif. – Charles Woodson is not going to let an injury sideline him any longer.

The Raiders’ cornerback insists he will play this week despite having a crack in the fibula bone of his right leg.

When Woodson revealed the severity of his injury Monday, it came as a surprise because the Raiders had initially listed him as having an injured ankle. Then it became a leg injury, with no details provided on the change.

Bucs’ QB Johnson expected to play

Tampa, Fla. – Quarterback Brad Johnson is probable for next Monday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers despite a sprained right thumb and lower back bruise.

Johnson topped an injury report that included defensive tackle Anthony McFarland, who broke his right foot during Sunday’s 23-20 victory over the Detroit Lions. McFarland is out for the season.

Safety John Lynch, who sat out the Detroit game with a neck sprain, was upgraded to probable against the Steelers.

Browns’ Brown to undergo surgery

Berea, Ohio – Cleveland Browns defensive end Courtney Brown will have knee surgery Thursday and might be out for the season.

Coach Butch Davis said Monday that Brown appears to have cartilage damage in his left knee and will undergo surgery to determine the extent of the injury.
